Minimalist Packing for Costa Rica

Packing for Costa Rica in the offseason is no joke! You almost have to pack for every single season, all in one trip! This was a good challenge for me when it came to reducing my bag weight and it really was a task! Here is my final packing list for Costa Rica in June.

Clothes :

  • 1 Sweater
  • 1 Legging
  • 1 Fancy beach dress
  • 1 Plastic poncho
  • 4 Tank tops
  • 2 Jean shorts
  • 1 Cotton shorts
  • 2 Bathing suits
  • 1 Sarong
  • 3 Socks
  • 5 Underwear
  • Converse
  • Running Shoes
  • Sandals



  • I last minute decided to swap my heavy rain jacket for a lighter plastic poncho
  • To keep my underwear/sock count low I bring a full bar of biodegradable soap and hand wash/ air dry them



  • Passport and cover
  • iPhone and charger
  • Battery pack and charger
  • Go Pro and charger
  • Combination lock
  • Jewelry



  • I forgot my tripod at home (stupid me)
  • I didn’t need the jewelry



  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Bar soap
  • Toothpaste tabs/ toothbrush
  • Inhaler
  • Razor
  • Brush
  • Makeup
  • Deodorant
  • Q-tips
  • Bug Spray and bug cream
  • Elastic
  • Advil



  • I could have done with only tweezers, eyebrow pencil, and mascara
  • Didn’t need elastic or q-tips



  • 1 Hat
  • Bum bag
  • 2 Water bottles
  • Towel
  • Water filter
  • Tote bag
  • Backpack cover
  • Sleeping bag liner



  • Water bottle 1 was confiscated in Mexico City
  • I didn’t need the backpack cover, water filter or sleeping bag liner
  • I ended up having to buy a plastic Tupperware container while in CR


In conclusion, I packed all of 58 things and excluding souvenirs I only purchased 1 thing!

Let’s see if I can keep this number down on my next trip!
